What to do if you find a suspicious package

Official updatesLU-Alert · RTL, 100.7 · 112

Do this now

  1. Leave it exactly where it is. Do not touch, move, open, shake or smell it, and do not go closer to look or to take a photo.
  2. Step back and get everyone out of the room or away from the spot. Keep people from walking past it.
  3. Call the police on Status: Verified once you are well away. Call Status: Verified if someone is hurt or feels ill.
  4. Tell the police where it is, what it looks like, when you first saw it and why it worries you.
  5. If you touched it, or powder or liquid came out, wash your hands with soap and water at once and tell the police.
  6. Tell the security staff or the person in charge of the building, if there is one, so they can keep the area clear.
  7. Wait at a safe distance until the police arrive, and follow what they tell you.

Before

Know what to report

  • The official advice is to report objects left behind and suspicious behaviour to the Grand Ducal Police on Status: Verified, or to the security staff on site.
  • A bag or parcel left with no owner in a station, a shop or a crowded place is worth reporting. The police decide whether it is dangerous, not you.
  • Never call Status: Verified or Status: Verified just to test the line.

At home and at work

  • Keep your own bags with you in public places, so that staff do not have to treat them as suspicious.
  • At work, find out who to tell and where the assembly point is if a building has to be cleared.
  • Save Status: Verified and Status: Verified in every phone in the household. Add them to your household plan.

After

  • Go back only when the police say the area is safe.
  • If you were told to wash or change clothes, do so, and keep the clothes in a closed bag until the police or the emergency services say what to do with them.
  • If you feel unwell after being near a parcel that leaked, call Status: Verified and say what happened. See Biological attack for what to do with your clothes and skin.
  • Do not post photos or guesses about the object online. Leave the news to the police and official channels.
  • Report suspicious objects even if you are unsure. Let the police check them.

If you are…

Looking after children

  • Teach children never to pick up or kick a bag, box or parcel that nobody seems to own, and to tell an adult instead.

Older, ill, or living with a disability

  • If you cannot move away quickly, ask someone nearby to help you and to call the police for you.

Opening the post at home or at work

  • If a letter or parcel leaks powder or liquid, put it down gently, leave the room and keep others out. Wash your hands and call the police.

In a block of flats

  • If something is left in the stairwell, the cellar or the entrance, keep the neighbours away from it and tell the building manager as well as the police.
